Oldman River Walk & Wades

This gin clear river twists its way through canyons in some of the most impressive scenery the Rocky Mountains has to offer. Cast dry flies into pool after pool filled with rising Cutthroat Trout.

Pockets, riffles, and runs round this water out as a classic dry fly stream. The Oldman River supports an extremely healthy population of fish with your average Cutthroat being around 16″ with many caught over 20” and true trophies pushing the 24” mark are possible.

This portion of the Oldman river is home to many hybridized “cutbows”, which, although they are not native, possess the strong and acrobatic nature of the rainbow, as well as the eagerness to come to the surface for a dry fly that we so love Cutthroat for. They’re the best of both worlds. If you’ve ever thought of cutthroat as lacklustre fighters, you need to experience Oldman river cutthroat. They will re-define your idea of cutthroat. These are fish that will fight like miniature steelhead, often taking people into their backing or forcing them to give chase or face an imminent break off. We’ve even had cutthroat so wild as to jump down the falls after being hooked.

As with many of the rivers in the Oldman drainage you never know when you will have a monster bull trout chasing after the cutthroat you just hooked. Your guide will have streamers and another rod rigged at all times ready to cast to these large and predacious fish that are an absolute blast on fly gear. We’ve seen cutthroat to 24”, rainbows and cutbows pushing over 25” and bull trout that can commonly reach 30” and do surpass the 36” mark. The thing to understand on the Oldman is that the biggest fish are going to require more technical casts and drifts but this is where they call home.  The only thing as incredible as the fish that call the Oldman river home is completely breath-taking scenery they call home. You don’t simply fish the Oldman…you experience it. You owe it to yourself to experience this river with a guide who can maximize your chances at success on this truly trophy fishery.

Included in the rate is: equipment, lunch, non-alcoholic drinks, and snacks for 1 or 2 people.  As an option on walk and wade trips an additional angler can be added for $175.  The only costs not included are your fishing license, tax (5% GST), and guide gratuities which are customary.
