Sharkin' - You're Gonna Need A Bigger Fly Rod - Video Spotlight
“Mr. Hooper, I’m not talkin’ about pleasure boatin’ or daily sailin’, I’m talkin’ about workin’ for a livin’, I’m talking about sharkin’!” ~Quint
Humans have been fishing for sharks eons before JAWS came out in 1975. But suddenly sharks appearing on angler's bucket lists everywhere. Fly fishing for sharks isn't new, but the topic has come up in the shop a lot more often of late. Angler's Eye Media's film "Mako" presented in this year's IF4 I'm sure has a lot to do with it. It's exhilarating big game action, and we all watched that film, eyes wide, thinking "I want to do that!"
Aside from the big game equipment needed, a few of us have talked about just how you'd rig up flies for sharks. This video spotlight is all about how to rig up a fly for giant mako sharks presented by preeminent shark angler and conservationist Conway Bowman on the Orvis Channel. This technique isn't shark exclusive - you can use it for all the scary toothy fishes out there.
If you haven't seen IF4 yet this year, here's the trailer for "Mako". Disclaimer - watching this video may increase your fly rod collection and list of angling destinations. ~Courtney
